Custodian
TITLE: CUSTODIAN – WV Code §18A-4-8 defines positions as follows:
Custodian I – means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse.
Custodian II – means a person employed as a watchman or groundsman.
Custodian III – means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems and to make minor repairs.
Custodian IV – means a person employed as head custodians. In addition to providing services as defined in “custodian II,” duties may include supervising other custodian personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Statutory definition: Means personnel employed to keep building clean and free of refuse.
REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal
SUPERVISE:
CWEP employees and student help as assigned by the building principal
SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS:
Work is assigned and reviewed by the building principal. the custodian works with building staff, related agencies, and the administration to keep the building clean.
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
Performs all duties related to related to keeping the building(s) where assigned secure, free of refuse, and clean.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
I. Work Habits
1. Routinely adheres to the established hours of work
2. Maintains regular attendance – not missing without reasonable cause
3. Follows established rules, policies, and procedures
4. Follows accepted safety practices and related to the performance of assigned duties
5. Schedules work so that all requirements are met in the performance of duties
6. Willingly accepts change in regard to the job
7. Maintains the work area in a neat and appropriate manner
8. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of the job
9. Maintains a positive attitude
II. Performance
1. Exercises good judgment in the performance of duties
2. Organizes cleaning tasks to endure that required duties are performed (both daily and weekly)
3. Maintains building in a manner that meets a high quality level so that all areas are clean and free of dust and refuse
4. Shows a high level of responsibility toward performance of all related duties
5. Follows instructions in the performance of all requests and duties
6. Is able to maintain efficiency under stress
7. Keeps cleaning equipment clean and in working order
8. Maintains security over the building
9. Orders, by requisition, supplies for the building
10. Coordinates work with other workers and with school functions
11. Performs snow shoveling and related cleaning tasks on request of the principal/asst. principal including those days on which school is closed for inclement weather as requested by the supervisor
12. Performs other custodial related tasks as requested by the administration
13. Repairs and maintains equipment in the building
14. Raises and lowers U.S. Flag each day
15. Reports major repairs needed to the principal
16. Opens the building at a prescribed hour each day
17. Conducts periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition
18. Operates heating and cooling system
III. Professional Development
1. Keeps abreast of job requirements by reading, course work, work on professional committees,
visiting other school systems and meeting with peers;
2. Participates in staff development activities;
3. Attends in-house meetings designed to familiarize staff with professional issues;
4. Participates in workshop seminars, or conferences at which topics are discussed that relate to the job;
5. Seeks and shares professional materials and ideas;
6. Belongs to appropriate professional associations.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Term and salary to be determined by salary schedule adopted by the Tucker County Board of Education.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of Board policy on evaluation of personnel.
