Mechanic
TITLE: MECHANIC –WV Code §18A-4-8 defines positions as follows:
Mechanic – means a person employed to perform skilled duties independently in the maintenance and repair of automobile, school buses and other mechanical and mobile equipment to use in a county school system.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have previous verifiable experience and/or training as a mechanic.
2. Must hold a valid CDL Class B operators license with (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus endorsements.
3. Must successfully pass the written mechanics test developed and produced by the West Virginia Department of Education.
4. Must successfully demonstrate knowledge of competencies through a hands-on assessment.
5. Must have or be able to obtain a State Inspectors License to enable employee to inspect all county owned vehicles on a yearly basis.
6. Must hold or be able to obtain any other licensure that may be required by State or Federal regulations
7. Must provide evidence of good health.
8. Must be able to keep accurate computer based records of work completed.
REPORTS TO:
Supervisor of Transportation
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Be extensively familiar with mechanical aspects of all vehicles and maintain a high
standard of workmanship. This shall include a knowledge of necessary day to day repairs and major overhauls.
2. Be skilled in the art of planned maintenance and maintain computer records of all
work orders and completed maintenance.
3. Assist in the maintenance of a current computer based inventory of supplies and
equipment.
4. Assist in the establishment of an efficient and effective computer based system of
routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
5. Complete day-to-day repairs and major overhauls.
6. Assist in the periodic inspections of all county buses to ascertain that buses are ready for inspection by the West Virginia State Transportation Department. Do annual state inspections on all county owned vehicles.
7. Inspect all new buses purchased and buses on which repairs have been made and release same for transporting students. New bus inspection shall insure that all applicable State standards, Federal Standards and nay item set forth in the purchase contract have been met.
8. Knowledge and ability to perform the State adopted performance responsibilities which include tasks associated with maintenance and servicing:
Basic Engines Basic automotive electrical systems and computer system
Ignition system Cooling and Heating system
Brake systems Transmissions
Drivelines Steering and suspensions
Exhaust systems Lubrication
Steering and wheels
Engine blocks
Cylinder heads and valve systems
Fuel system
Chassis and cab maintenance
9. Perform engine mechanical maintenance.
10. Perform precision measurements.
11. Be prepared to assist the transportation supervisor in determining when a bus is unsafe for student transport.
12. Promote high standards of safety and good workmanship in all work connected areas.
13. Be knowledgeable of emergency procedures and be prepared to go out on an emergency situation at any time.
14. Transport students on an emergency or as-need basis when directed by the Transportation Supervisor.
15. Attend in service meetings, State conferences, and other institutes to upgrade competencies.
16. Be familiar with standards as set forth in the West Virginia School Transportation Regulations and the Tucker County Policy Manual.
17. Abide by all rules and regulation pertaining to service personnel.
18. Any and all other duties as determined by the Transportation Supervisor.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
240 day contract or as determined by the Superintendent or the Tucker County Board of Education.
EVALUATION:
As required by Tucker County Schools Evaluation Policy.
